The original gentlemanly declaration to engage in mechanized melee.
The time we have all eagerly waited for has finally arrived and the wait has been sweetened with every sneak peak and shot of vehicular carnage. Billed as the “World’s First Giant Robot Fight”, the upcoming bout (will there be rounds?) between MegaBots’s Eagle Prime and Suidobashi Heavy Industry’s Kuratas has been scheduled for October 17 at 7:00 PM PST. It will premiere on Twitch, a platform more accustomed to the backdrop of fierce virtual combat and soundtracks composed by digital artists than real life robotic dueling. Reading up on the duel it is a bit disappointing that it has already occurred. That’s right, first robot duel and we didn’t even see it.
We get to see the recording because 1) There was no audience 2) This is still a new concept and 3) It took place over several days as the teams repaired and inspected the robots after bouts. A bit anti-climatic but this is still in testing. If you want greatness you have to work on it. The cool thing is that it will have professional commentary by, “…Mike Goldberg of the MMA and robotics expert Saura Naderi.” I’ll do my damnedest to see it live and publish a reaction afterward and I suggest you do the same as I’d love to hear the opinions of the fans of a nascent sport set for stardom. Tuesday night we’ll see how amazing these robots truly are. Happy viewing.
