The Next Film #4: Silver & Black

Colombia Pictures, the original owner of Spider-Man, has decided to push their Spider-Man agenda forward by turning the characters Silver Sable & Black Cat into a film called Silver & Black. Sable is a mercenary who runs a mercenary company and is the leader of the fictional Eastern European country Symkaria. Interestingly enough, her nation borders the nation ruled by Doctor Doom, the main antagonist of Fantastic Four, yet she mainly appears next to Spider-Man. The Black Cat is a Catwoman type who dresses like a cat. She initially stole for a living but then teamed up with Spider-Man and became a hero so she’s a bit of a mixed bag. Apparently they’re keeping the film in-universe but separate from the MCU. This would be similar to the relationship that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have with the MCU. The release date is February 8, 2019.

Sony Slots ‘Silver and Black’ for Feb. 2019, ‘Sicario’ Sequel for June 2018

The director is Gina Prince-Bythewood who has mainly directed and written low budget drama films with some success as well as directing plenty of television shows. My concern is that taking on a film that will be much larger and different than what she is used to could prove difficult. Originally Chris Yost (Ragnarok) rewrote the script with Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Amy Pascal (Ghostbusters, Spider-Man: Homecoming) as producers but Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider) were hired to rewrite that script which may begin dragging the film’s production.

Looking at the schedule Colombia has planned for the future, it looks like they’re trying to hop on the superhero train. Since Marvel has already borrowed Spider-Man it’s no surprise Colombia would want to expand their reach into the universe and profit off their unused licenses. As a reminder, Colombia is owned by Sony so when you see people say Sony they’re one in the same.
