This is the clock tower in Izmit called the Saat Kulesi (sah-t coup-less-e, this my attempt at phonetic reading). It was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was one among many constructed across the empire to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, one of the last. It’s just a tower with a clock on it (nice though) and the area around it has a cafe and a small park. The tower is situated on a hill and gives a very breathtaking view of the Sea of Marmara along with the city of Gölcük which, at night, gleam with massive arrays of lights and soft breezes in the summer. The different pieces of art you see below are depictions of a series of buildings native to Izmit which stretch across a stone and mortar wall along the road heading into the heart of the city. The last interesting bit is in the center of the photo. See the water next to the words Izmit Belediyesi? This is a large piece of waterworks along the walkway beneath the hill which shoots water up as well as letting it flow down. During the heat of mid-summer, it definitely feels nice to sit beside.
